Launch Pad

The Sriharikota Range, the Satellite Launching Station of ISRO, popularly known as SHAR is situated in an island off Sullurupeta - a small town in Nellore district, in the state of Andhra Pradesh - about 100 Km north of Chennai.  The national highway connecting Chennai and Kolkata passes through Sullurupeta town.  A twenty minutes drive from Sullurupeta towards the East along the road across the Pulicat Lake leads to SHAR.  Geographically, Sriharikota Range (SHAR) is situated at 80 deg. East Longitude and 13 deg. North Latitude.  This launch centre was named as Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR (SDSC-SHAR) in September 2002, in memory of Professor Satish Dhawan, Chairman of ISRO during 1972-1984.

The launch complex has complete support facilities for vehicle assembly, fuelling, checkout, launch operations and satellite preparation.  SDSC-SHAR also has facilities for launching sounding rockets meant for studying the earth’s atmosphere.
